A recent New York Times article has a bit to say about new possibilities in the publishing business.
Oprah has been the holy-grail of book promotion for quite a few years now. A brief appearance on Oprah can give an author 1000’s of sales in just a few hours. But in an age of the internet and mega-retailers such as Starbucks, Costco and Amazon, there are many other options.
Did you know that a book featured at Starbucks typically sells over 100,000 copies? Did you know that Costco only features 250 books at a time, any one of which can sell 50,000 or more copies? And how about that editor at Amazon who can feature your book and skyrocket it’s sales?
Widen your net. Get that book blog going if you don’t have one yet. And start thinking about a mega sales channel for your next bestseller.

Starbucks Wireless: Starbucks to Offer Free Wi-Fi
Starbucks Offering Free Wi-Fi
Starbucks is switching internet providers and is going to offer Free Wi-Fi in their stores. Well, forgive my language but it’s about damn time. Starbucks and T-Mobile had been charging ridiculous amounts for wireless. $6.00 for a connection? I don’t think so, unless I am on a business trip and desperate.
I’m not a big fan of Starbucks. I like their coffee but their shops are too noisy and busy for me to get much work done. But like most internet vagabonds - who can make their living from anywhere in the world with an internet and cell phone connection - I want wireless E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E. On those rare days when I wake up at 5:00 am, jonesing for some coffee shop coffee, Starbucks is the only one open in my town.
Now that Starbucks has gotten of their butt and woken up to the importance of wireless, they will get more of my business. Is anyone curious if Starbucks’ change is connected the their rather lackluster stock price over the last several years?
cheers - Ryan
